Plunkett Defeats Burch In Hillsboro Open Final

In what turned out to be a rematch of last year's title confrontation, Mike Plunkett of Hillsboro defeated Don Burch of Champaign for the championship of the 2005 Hillsboro Table Tennis Open, played Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Burch also finished second in doubles. Teamed with Linda Zhu, also of Champaign, they fell to Rick Goertz of Rochester and Steve Moroney of Decatur. Ed Voice of Decatur defeated Kevin Buente of Bloomington 3-2 in the Class B singles championship, and Kirk Kendle of Taylorville defeated Jonathan Buzick of Mt. Olive by default in the Class C title match. In the Hillsboro High School championship match, Nathan Loucks defeated Luke Luckett (both of Hillsboro) 3-1.
 
This year's draw was the tournament's biggest yet in it's 16-year history; 45 players from throughout the central part of the state came to Hillsboro to compete. The tournament was sponsored by The Journal-News.

In Class A singles, Plunkett finished 6-0 in his round robin and advanced to the semifinals where he posted a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Goertz,who had finished 5-1 in the other Class A round robin. Burch had won that round robin with a 6-0 record, and he defeated Joe Hollingsworth of Chrisman 3-1 in the other semifinal. Hollingsworth advanced to the semis by going 4-2 in round robin play.
 
In doubles, Goertz and Moroney defeated Plunkett and Robert Eddington of Hillsboro 3-0 in their semifinal match while Burch and Zhu defeated Mark Mathews of Hillsboro and Eric Marcol of Taylorville 3-0 in the other.
 
Voice advanced to the Class B singles championship by beating Johnny Satterlee of Taylorville 3-0 in one semifinal; Buente advanced by beating Eddington 3-0 in the other. In Class C, Kendle beat Shane Griffin of Hillsboro 3-0 in his semifinal and Buzick defeated Justin Mathis of Mt. Olive 3-2 in the other.
