Goertz Back On Top At Hillsboro Table Tennis Open

One of the tournament's veteran players and most prolific winners, Rick Goertz of Rochester, dominated the Hillsboro Table Tennis Open Saturday, winning his sixth singles championship and teaming with Eric Marcol of Springfield, MO, to win doubles. Goertz won his first Hillsboro Open singles title in 1989. Saturday's tournament, played at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, was the 17th and was sponsored by The Journal-News. Goertz defeated Mike Plunkett of Hillsboro 3-2 in the singles final after beating Mike Meier, also of Hillsboro, 3-0 in the semifinals. Plunkett had advanced to the championship by beating Mark Mathews of Hillsboro 3-0 in the other semifinal.

In doubles, Goertz and Marcol beat Plunkett and Meier 3-1 for the championship. The winners advanced to the championship by beating Brad Kendle and Johnny Satterlee, both of Taylorville, 3-0 in the semifinals while Plunkett and Meier got there by downing Mathews and John Miller of Harvel 3-1.

In Class B singles, it was Jason Eshegbye of Mattoon over Robert Eddington of Hillsboro 3-2 for the championship. Eshegbye ousted Eric Niemann of Hillsboro 3-1 in one semifinal while Eddington beat Roger Mansholt of Gillespie 3-2 in the other.

Josh Kugler of Cantrell defeated Jeff Miller of Harvel 3-1 for the Class C singles title. Kugler got to the championship by beating Lance Weitekamp of Raymond 3-0 in his semifinal, while Miller advanced by beating Robert Oyler of Taylorville 3-2 in the other.
