Though not huge, at 31 entries, this was the largest turnout ever for an STTC tournament. Very few complaints and tons of compliments made this event feel like a huge success. I will have to admit that most of the compliments were about the food (thanks Roberta)! I am proud of our guys killing so many of the events. We have never had such club participation, including our tournaments from several years ago.Way to go STTC!
Newsworthy STTC newcomer, Tommy Lord, came in and helped set up for the tournament. We gave him a t-shirt for his labor, then he got greedy. Tommy took 1st in the Junior event, proceeded to the main event and earned 2nd in Class C Singles, then grabbed someone he never met before and stole 2nd place in Class B Doubles. Don't forget he just started playing competitivly a few months ago. He even stayed afterwards to help clean up the mess. Way to go Tommy..... |

This year's Hillsboro Table Tennis Open final had a familiar look to it, with the tournament's two most prolific winners tangling for the championship. This time it was Hillsboro's Mike Plunkett, claiming his eighth tournament title by defeating Rick Goertz of Rochester, who has topped the tournament field six times in its 19-year history. The tournament, sponsored by The Journal-News and played at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsboro on Saturday, featured players from Peoria, Decatur, Springfield, Bloomington, Charleston, quad cities, St. Louis, and throughout Central Illinois. Although Plunkett defeated Goertz three games to none (3-0) in the championship, his path to the final wasn't so smooth.

It was great to be back in the tournament arena. This was STTC's first event in at least 6 or 7 years. With 27 entries, and just over 100 matches played things went pretty smooth. (Complete round robin match results in PDF format.) It gave me chills to have our very own Jamie Kemp sing the National Anthem for our kick off tournament. We also had great food from Roberta's kitchen. Thanks Jamie and Roberta..... You two made this a memorable tournament for me and hopfully for everyone!
